Ramayana: Part 1 is a grand, visually breathtaking cinematic retelling of India’s greatest epic, and Nitesh Tiwari deserves credit for bringing the world of Ayodhya, Mithila, Dandaka and Lanka to life with astonishing scale and sincerity. The film is not just a mythology adaptation; it is an immersive theatrical experience that makes the familiar story of Rama, Sita and Ravana feel larger than life on the big screen. Ranbir Kapoor brings a calm, composed and dignified presence to Lord Rama, portraying the prince with restraint rather than exaggerated heroism, which allows the character’s inner strength and sense of duty to shine through. Sai Pallavi is graceful, expressive and emotionally powerful as Sita; she gives the character dignity, resilience and agency, making her more than just a figure waiting to be rescued. Yash is the absolute show-stealer as Ravana, bringing menace, charisma and commanding physicality to the role, and his performance gives the antagonist a fearsome yet fascinating screen presence. Ravi Dubey adds warmth and energy as Lakshmana, while Sunny Deol’s Hanuman, Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Vivek Oberoi, Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh and Anupam Kher strengthen the epic with well-cast supporting roles. The biggest triumph of Ramayana lies in its production design, visual effects and world-building—the detailed depiction of divine palaces, forests, Rakshasa kingdoms and celestial beings creates a rich mythological universe that feels both majestic and believable. The VFX work is among the finest seen in Indian cinema, and sequences such as Jatayu’s confrontation with Ravana stand out for their emotional weight and visual intensity. AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer’s music elevates the film’s grandeur, blending orchestral scale with Indian devotional emotion to give key moments a powerful, goosebumps-inducing impact. The film’s emotional core remains intact despite its massive scale: the bond between Rama and Sita, Lakshmana’s loyalty, Kaikeyi’s conflict and Ravana’s growing obsession are all handled with care. While the runtime is long and some portions move at a measured pace, the film rewards patience with spectacular set pieces, heartfelt performances and a strong sense of devotion to the source material. Ramayana: Part 1 succeeds in making audiences feel the weight of the epic rather than merely watching it unfold, and it sets a high benchmark for Indian mythological cinema.
A visually magnificent, emotionally engaging and proudly Indian epic that deserves to be experienced on the biggest screen.
