Scene Movie Review

Scene is a refreshing, wildly entertaining crime comedy-thriller that flips the usual serial-killer investigation formula into something quirky, clever, and thoroughly enjoyable. Directed by Jithu Madhavan in his Tamil debut, the film blends dark humour, sharp writing, and inventive plotting to deliver a ride that keeps audiences hooked from start to finish.

Suriya delivers one of his most relaxed and charming performances as DSP Inbaraj, a sharp but reckless cop who’s trying to retire before a case pulls him back in. His comic timing, expressive body language, and natural ease in the role make Inbaraj feel fresh and relatable, a welcome departure from his usual larger-than-life image.

Nazriya Nazim shines as Maya, the emotional core of the film, bringing grace and intensity to a character that could easily have been one-dimensional. Naslen, as the serial killer Eswaran, is a revelation—understated yet chilling, he plays the villain with a casual, almost mundane energy that makes him even more unsettling.

Jithu Madhavan’s direction is the film’s biggest strength, infusing the narrative with his signature brand of quirky, dark humour that keeps the tone light even as the stakes rise. The cat-and-mouse game between Inbaraj and Eswaran is one of the most inventive in recent Tamil cinema, with each character’s flaws becoming an advantage rather than a weakness.

The film’s technical aspects—cinematography, editing, and Sushin Shyam’s background score—work in perfect harmony to enhance the tension and mood. The visuals are vibrant and stylish, while the score adds an extra layer of suspense without overwhelming the comedy.

Scene succeeds because it doesn’t take itself too seriously, allowing its characters to lead the story and finding humour in situations that would normally be treated with gravity. It’s a fun, clever, and refreshing take on the investigative genre, with strong performances, sharp writing, and a distinctive directorial voice.

For audiences looking for something different from the usual Tamil thriller, Scene delivers a wild, funny, and satisfying big-screen experience. It’s the kind of film that reminds you why cinema can be both entertaining and inventive, leaving you smiling and thinking long after the credits roll.
