A hauntingly atmospheric tale of discipline, dysfunction, and despair.
Naangal, directed by Karthik Suresh, is an indie festival film that delves into the lives of three young boys raised under the iron-fisted rule of their father, Rajkumar, a strict school principal. Set in the misty locales of Lovedale, Ooty, the film explores themes of authoritarian parenting, estrangement, and emotional isolation.
While the arrival of Padma, the estranged wife, hints at reconciliation, the film leaves crucial character motives and conflicts unresolved — notably Rajkumar’s unexplained hostility and the emotional disconnect with his children.
The performances, especially by the three boys and Abdul Rafe, stand out. The cinematography is brooding and evocative, though the narrative’s reluctance to provide closure may test viewers’ patience.
Strengths: Strong performances, atmospheric visuals, and a poignant theme.
Weaknesses: Unresolved subplots, ambiguous character motives, and an emotionally incomplete ending.
Verdict:
“A visually rich, emotionally unsettling family drama — poignant but unfinished.”
