Singgaramm Movie Review

Singgaramm is a heartfelt, socially conscious drama that brings the struggles of the Narikuravar community to the big screen with sincerity and emotional depth. Written and directed by K.V. Kathirvelu, the film follows Singaram (Yogi Babu), a bead seller from a nomadic tribe whose community is denied basic welfare benefits because they lack official identity documents. When a sudden lottery win changes his fortunes, Singaram decides to use his newfound wealth to fight for his people’s rights, dignity, and recognition. The story explores themes of identity, social prejudice, caste, colour, and the courage to stand up against a system that has long ignored marginalised communities.

Yogi Babu delivers one of the most important performances of his career, stepping away from his usual comic roles to portray a serious, emotionally layered character. He brings innocence, courage, and determination to Singaram, making the character’s journey believable and moving. His performance is widely regarded as a career milestone, comparable to his work in Mandela, and he anchors the film’s emotional core with restraint and sincerity.

The supporting cast adds significant value to the film. Vela Ramamoorthy, M.S. Bhaskar, Manobala, Badava Gopi, Sendrayan, and Maria Vincent bring their experience and gravitas to their roles, enriching the world of the film. Their characters add depth to the social commentary and help ground the emotional beats. The ensemble cast makes the village and community settings feel authentic and lived-in.

Director K.V. Kathirvelu handles the story with a sympathetic and sensitive approach. He raises pertinent questions about the origins of social prejudice and why discrimination based on caste, race, and colour continues to shape human relationships. The first half may feel slow, but the second half gains emotional momentum, with several exchanges standing out for their simplicity and impact. The film’s focus on the Narikuravar community and their struggles is a meaningful and timely subject that deserves attention.

Sam C.S.’s music and background score play a significant role in shaping the film’s mood. The BGM adds considerable value, particularly in the emotional sequences, enhancing the impact without overpowering the scenes. The songs, with lyrics by Viveka, complement the social and emotional themes of the story. Prasanna S. Kumar’s cinematography captures the rural and tribal settings effectively, adding visual texture to the narrative. Lawrence Kishore’s editing maintains a smooth flow, ensuring that the film never feels dragged out.

Singgaramm is a meaningful, emotionally resonant social drama that benefits from Yogi Babu’s career-best performance, a strong supporting cast, K.V. Kathirvelu’s sensitive direction, and Sam C.S.’s impactful music. While the film may feel slow or sentimental in places, its powerful subject, authentic portrayal of the Narikuravar community, and strong emotional core make it a rewarding watch. For audiences looking for a socially relevant drama with heart, courage, and a meaningful message, Singgaramm is a satisfying and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
