Following the remarkable success of Habeebi, actor Eesa has signed a couple of promising new projects, marking an exciting new chapter in his burgeoning cinematic journey. Reflecting on the film’s overwhelming reception and the opportunities that have followed, the actor opens up about his journey into cinema and the experiences that have shaped him.
Tamil cinema continues to welcome a new generation of aspiring actors every year. However, only a select few are fortunate enough to begin their careers with a compelling story, a character that offers ample scope for performance, and a filmmaker capable of bringing out their true potential. Esha considers himself fortunate to have found all three in his debut film, Habeebi, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Meera Kathiravan
Hailing from Madurai, Esha is currently pursuing his law degree at Vels University, Chennai. Alongside his academic journey, he has distinguished himself as a national-level athlete, winning several medals and accolades in athletics competitions. The discipline, perseverance, and unwavering commitment that shaped his sporting career have now become the very foundation of his journey in cinema.
Esha embarked on his journey in the industry as an Assistant Director in the film Uyir Tamizhukku, directed by producer-filmmaker Adam Bava and starring actor Ameer. The experience offered him valuable exposure to the craft of filmmaking, laying a strong foundation for his aspirations in the industry.
“During this phase, I tried inheriting the skills and learn the art of extracting the best performances of artistes by directors. This helped me to gain some acting nuances indeed,” says actor Esha.
Through director Aslam, Esha learnt that filmmaker Meera Kathiravan was conducting auditions for the lead role in Habeebi. He attended the audition with hope and determination, but after months of silence with no updates, he was uncertain about the outcome. It was only six months later, when he received a call for rehearsals, that he discovered he had been chosen as the film’s protagonist, marking a life-changing moment in his cinematic journey.
“Right from Day 1, I wanted to make sure that the director shouldn’t lose his hope he had banked on me, and I went to shooting spot with best preparations,” adds Esha. Furthermore, he claims that he went through several auditions and acting workshops. He wanted to make sure of not brimming up with a ‘Hero’ material attitude, but instead, prove to be a content-driven performer.
“Sincerely, I wanted to approach my character with realistic approach, and am glad to see that audience have noticed and appreciated it.”
In Habeebi, Esha portrays a character that traverses three distinct phases of life, each demanding a completely different emotional and physical transformation. Demonstrating remarkable dedication to the role, he underwent multiple body transformations, first shedding considerable weight, then gaining nearly 20Kgs, before reducing it once again to authentically reflect the character’s evolving journey across different timelines.
“For a character to look authentic, an actor must mould and shape towards it. I wholeheartedly embraced the process,” says Esha.
Recalling his experience on the sets of Habeebi, Esha says that sharing screen space with veteran filmmaker-actor Kasthuri Raja and actress Malavika Manoj played a significant role in shaping his performance. Their constant encouragement, support, and collaborative spirit helped him perform with greater confidence and natural ease before the camera.
Esha’s performance in Habeebi has also earned widespread appreciation from several leading names in the Tamil film industry. After watching the film’s special previews, acclaimed filmmakers including Mari Selvaraj, Sudha Kongara, Balaji Sakthivel, Ameer, Cheran, Sasikumar, Vetrimaaran, Mysskin, Seenu Ramasamy, K. Bhagyaraj, Magizh Thirumeni, Suseenthiran, Nassar, P.C. Sreeram, Pandiraj, Aslam, Pa. Ranjith, Ram, V.Z. Durai, Thangar Bachan, Suresh Kamatchi, and many other prominent personalities lauded his natural performance, emotional depth, and the remarkable dedication he invested in bringing the character to life.
Speaking about the challenging experience of showcasing two different looks, body language and dialogue modulations, Esha says, “ It’s great to hear many complement me stating that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any first timer. I feel lucky and blessed for having got this opportunity.”
Reflecting on the trust placed in him by director Meera Kathiravan, Esha says, “Entrusting such a layered and demanding character to a newcomer like me required immense faith, and it was director Meera Kathiravan who saw the potential in me and brought it to the forefront. Whatever appreciation and success I have received for Habeebi rightfully belongs to him. Moving forward, my greatest responsibility is to honour the confidence he reposed in me through every film I choose to be a part of.”
Following the success of Habeebi, Esha has now signed two new films as the lead actor. Speaking about his upcoming projects, he reveals that both films will blend commercial entertainment with socially relevant themes, adding that official announcements regarding the projects will be made soon.
Sharing his thoughts on the current landscape of Tamil cinema, Esha says, “Today, many well-made films produced on modest budgets often struggle to receive the recognition and support they deserve before their release. More often than not, their quality is acknowledged only after they reach audiences. If meaningful films receive stronger encouragement during their initial stages, Tamil cinema will undoubtedly witness many more remarkable stories finding their way to the big screen.”
Concluding the conversation on a hopeful note, Esha says, “From my school and college days, athletics has always been an integral part of my life, and I have been fortunate to win several medals through the sport. Although cinema now occupies most of my time, I wish to continue being recognised not just as an actor, but also as a sportsperson. My only aspiration is to keep choosing meaningful stories, memorable characters, and good cinema. That is the path I want my journey to follow.”

‘ஹபீபி’ வெற்றிக்குப் பிறகு இரண்டு புதிய படங்களில் கதாநாயகனாக ஒப்பந்தமான இளம் நடிகர் ஈசா – தனது திரைப்பயணம், வெற்றி மற்றும் எதிர்காலம் குறித்து மனம் திறக்கிறார்
தமிழ் சினிமாவில் ஆண்டுதோறும் ஏராளமான புதுமுகங்கள் அறிமுகமாகின்றனர். ஆனால் முதல் படத்திலேயே சிறந்த கதை, வலுவான கதாபாத்திரம், திறமையான இயக்குநர், ரசிகர்களின் வரவேற்பு, விமர்சகர்களின் பாராட்டு என அனைத்தும் ஒருசேர கிடைப்பது மிகவும் அரிது. அந்த அரிய வாய்ப்பைப் பெற்றிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் மீரா கதிரவன் இயக்கத்தில் வெளியாகி வெற்றிகரமாக ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் ‘ஹபீபி’ திரைப்படத்தின் கதாநாயகன் ஈசா.
மதுரையைச் சேர்ந்த ஈசா, சென்னை வேல்ஸ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் சட்டக்கல்வி பயின்று வரும் மாணவர். அதேநேரத்தில் தேசிய அளவிலான தடகளப் போட்டிகளில் பங்கேற்று பல பதக்கங்களையும் பரிசுகளையும் வென்ற விளையாட்டு வீரரும் ஆவார். விளையாட்டின் மூலம் பெற்ற ஒழுக்கம், விடாமுயற்சி, கட்டுப்பாடு ஆகியவற்றையே சினிமாவிலும் தனது பலமாக மாற்றிக் கொண்டுள்ளார்.
திரைப்படத் துறையில் தனது பயணத்தை தயாரிப்பாளரும் இயக்குநருமான ஆதம் பாவா இயக்கத்தில், நடிகர் அமீர் நடித்த ‘உயிர் தமிழுக்கு’ திரைப்படத்தில் உதவி இயக்குநராகப் பணியாற்றியதன் மூலம் தொடங்கினார்.
“திரைப்படம் எப்படி உருவாகிறது, ஒரு காட்சியை எப்படி வடிவமைக்கிறார்கள், நடிகர்களிடமிருந்து இயக்குநர் எப்படி நடிப்பை வெளிக்கொண்டு வருகிறார் என்பதையெல்லாம் அப்போது நேரடியாகக் கற்றுக்கொண்டேன். அந்த அனுபவம்தான் இன்று ஒரு நடிகராக என்னைத் தயார்படுத்தியது,” என்கிறார் ஈசா.
அதன்பிறகு இயக்குநர் அஸ்லம் மூலம், இயக்குநர் மீரா கதிரவன் தனது ‘ஹபீபி’ திரைப்படத்திற்கான நடிகர் தேர்வை நடத்துவதாக அறிந்து ஆடிஷனில் பங்கேற்றார். ஆடிஷனுக்குப் பிறகு ஆறு மாதங்கள் எந்தத் தகவலும் இல்லாத நிலையில், ரிகர்சலுக்கு அழைப்பு வந்தபோதுதான் கதாநாயகனாக தேர்வாகியிருப்பது உறுதியானது.
“முதல் நாளிலிருந்தே இயக்குநரின் நம்பிக்கையை எந்தக் காரணத்திற்காகவும் இழக்கக் கூடாது என்பதே என் எண்ணமாக இருந்தது. அதற்காக ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் முழு அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் தயாராகி சென்றேன்,” என்று கூறுகிறார்.
நடிப்பு பயிற்சிகள், ஒர்க்ஷாப்கள் மற்றும் தொடர்ச்சியான ரிகர்சல்கள் மூலம் தன்னை முழுமையாக தயார்படுத்திக் கொண்ட ஈசா, “நான் ஹீரோ” என்ற மனநிலையோடு அல்லாமல், கதையின் ஒரு முக்கியமான கதாபாத்திரமாகவே தன்னை அணுகியதாகக் கூறுகிறார்.
“கதைக்குத் தேவையான மனிதராக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதைத்தான் நினைத்தேன். அதனால் என் நடிப்பு மிகவும் இயல்பாக வெளிப்பட்டது,” என்கிறார்.
‘ஹபீபி’ திரைப்படத்தில் மூன்று வெவ்வேறு காலகட்டங்களையும், மனநிலைகளையும் பிரதிபலிக்கும் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் நடித்துள்ள ஈசா, அதற்காக தனது உடல் எடையை கதாபாத்திரத் தேவைக்கேற்ப பலமுறை மாற்றியுள்ளார். முதலில் உடல் எடையைக் குறைத்து, பின்னர் சுமார் 20 கிலோ வரை அதிகரித்து, மீண்டும் குறைத்து நடித்துள்ளார்.
“ஒரு கதாபாத்திரம் உண்மையாகத் தோன்ற வேண்டுமென்றால், அதற்காக நடிகரும் மாற வேண்டும். அந்த மாற்றத்தை முழு மனதுடன் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டேன்,” என்று அவர் கூறுகிறார்.
படப்பிடிப்பு அனுபவம் குறித்து பேசும்போது, இணைந்து நடித்த கஸ்தூரிராஜா மற்றும் மாளவிகா மனோஜ் ஆகியோரின் ஒத்துழைப்பு தனது நடிப்பை மேலும் இயல்பாக்க உதவியதாக ஈசா குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.
‘ஹபீபி’ திரைப்படத்தின் சிறப்புக் காட்சிகளைப் பார்த்த இயக்குநர்கள் மாரி செல்வராஜ், சுதா கொங்கரா, பாலாஜி சக்திவேல், அமீர், சேரன், சசிகுமார், வெற்றிமாறன், மிஷ்கின், சீனு ராமசாமி, கே. பாக்யராஜ், மகிழ் திருமேனி, சுசீந்திரன், நாசர், பி.சி. ஸ்ரீராம், பாண்டிராஜ், அஸ்லம், பா. ரஞ்சித், ராம், வி.இசட். துரை, தங்கர் பச்சான், சுரேஷ் காமாட்சி உள்ளிட்ட பல முன்னணி இயக்குநர்கள் மற்றும் திரையுலக பிரபலங்கள், அவரது இயல்பான நடிப்பு, உணர்ச்சிப்பூர்வமான வெளிப்பாடு மற்றும் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்காக அவர் எடுத்துக்கொண்ட அர்ப்பணிப்பைப் பாராட்டியுள்ளனர்.
குறிப்பாக, முதல் படத்திலேயே இளம் வயது மற்றும் நடுத்தர வயது தோற்றங்களில் குரல், உடல்மொழி, முகபாவனைகளில் வித்தியாசம் காட்டி நடித்தது மிகப்பெரிய சாதனை என்றும், “இது எல்லோருக்கும் கிடைக்காத பாக்கியம்” என்றும் பலரும் பாராட்டியதாக ஈசா மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறார்.
தனது வெற்றிக்குக் காரணம் குறித்து பேசும்போது ஈசா நெகிழ்ச்சியுடன் கூறியதாவது:
“‘ஹபீபி’ திரைப்படம் மூலம் இன்று எனக்குக் கிடைத்திருக்கும் அத்தனை அங்கீகாரத்திற்கும், பாராட்டுகளுக்கும், புகழுக்கும் முழுச் சொந்தக்காரர் என் இயக்குநர் மீரா கதிரவன்தான். ஒரு புதுமுக நடிகரை நம்பி இவ்வளவு வலுவான கதாபாத்திரத்தை ஒப்படைத்து, என்னுள் இருந்த திறமையை வெளிக்கொண்டு வந்தவர் அவர்தான். இந்த வெற்றிக்கான முழுப் பெருமையும் அவருக்கே சேரும். இனி நான் நடிக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு படத்திலும் அவர் வைத்த நம்பிக்கையை காப்பாற்ற வேண்டும் என்பதுதான் என் மிகப்பெரிய பொறுப்பு.”
‘ஹபீபி’ திரைப்படத்தின் வெற்றியைத் தொடர்ந்து தற்போது இரண்டு புதிய திரைப்படங்களில் கதாநாயகனாக ஈசா ஒப்பந்தமாகியுள்ளார். அந்த இரண்டு படங்களும் வணிக அம்சங்களுடன் சமூகத்திற்கு தேவையான கருத்துகளையும் பேசும் படங்களாக உருவாகி வருவதாகவும், அவற்றின் அதிகாரப்பூர்வ அறிவிப்புகள் விரைவில் வெளியாகும் என்றும் தெரிவித்தார்.
மேலும், “இன்றைய சூழலில் சிறிய பட்ஜெட்டில் உருவாகும் நல்ல திரைப்படங்களுக்கு வெளியீட்டுக்கு முன்பே உரிய ஆதரவு கிடைப்பதில்லை. படம் வெளியான பிறகுதான் அதன் தரமும் மதிப்பும் பேசப்படுகிறது. அந்த நிலை மாறினால் இன்னும் பல தரமான படங்கள் தமிழ் சினிமாவுக்கு கிடைக்கும்,” என்றார்.
இறுதியாக, “பள்ளி, கல்லூரி நாட்களிலிருந்தே தடகளப் போட்டிகளில் ஆர்வமாக பங்கேற்று பல பரிசுகளை வென்றுள்ளேன். தற்போது சினிமா காரணமாக அதற்கான நேரம் குறைந்தாலும், நடிகராக மட்டுமல்ல, ஒரு விளையாட்டு வீரராகவும் தொடர்ந்து அறியப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதே என் விருப்பம். நல்ல கதைகள், நல்ல கதாபாத்திரங்கள், நல்ல சினிமா – அதுவே என் அடுத்த இலக்கு,” என்று நம்பிக்கையுடன் கூறி உரையாடலை நிறைவு செய்தார்.
