Sumo – Movie Review

“Sumo floats on charm but never wrestles its way to greatness.”

Synopsis:
When a champion sumo wrestler, Ganesh (Yoshinori Tashiro), mysteriously washes ashore in Chennai, locals Shiva and Jack take him in, leading to a series of comedic adventures before helping him return to Japan to reclaim his lost title.

Review:
Sumo starts with a quirky, promising idea but delivers a predictable and surface-level narrative. Shiva’s familiar humor brings occasional laughs, while Tashiro’s authentic and endearing performance as Ganesh is the heart of the film. Despite a shift towards emotional drama in the second half, the screenplay remains shallow, missing deeper cultural exploration. Technically decent with lively music and a short runtime, Sumo is a light, one-time watch that doesn’t fully realize its potential.

Verdict:

“A light-hearted idea that needed stronger storytelling muscle.”
